Thierry Lalo has composed five operas since 2001, each one of them a musical comedy written in jazz style, with the choir occupying a central place in the action. Particular attention is paid to prosody and dramaturgy, and voices are supported by a rhythm section supplemented by select brass, in arrangements strongly influenced by mainstream jazz harmony and technique. His attention to textual and melodic detail has been made possible by collaboration with librettists such as Colette Tomiche, Vincent Tavernier, Cécile Rigazio, and Christian Eymery.
Commissioned by the CREA (Center for Artistic Expressions and Encounters), the Maîtrise de Radio-France, and by the city of Ermont, these jazz operas have been performed many times since their creation, in spaces as prestigious as the Bastille Opera or the Cité de la Musique in Paris, the Opera of Vichy, the Grand Théâtre in Aix-en-Provence and the Scéne Nationale of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines.
